Default Metatrader 4 on Linux

There is a lot of interest out there in running Metatrader 4 on the Linux platform, however until Metaquotes does a native Linux version, the only option if you want to do it is to run it under WINE emulation.

What follows is a step by step guide to installing MT4 in Linux. I have used the excellent Ubuntu distribution for this task.

1) Install WINE if it's not already installed. I used version 0.9.33. Please refer to The Ubuntu Wiki for advanced WINE setup instructions.

2) From a valid windows installation, copy over all the fonts into your wine installation. Just replace "jafar" with your own username in the command below. It also assumes you told Ubuntu to mount your windows partition in /windows.
(*note, replace "jafar" with your own username in the following command*)

Quote:
cp /windows/WINDOWS/Fonts/* /home/jafar/.wine/c/windows/fonts/
3) Copy 2 needed DLL files from your valid windows installation.
(*note, replace "jafar" with your own username in the following command*)
Quote:
cp /windows/WINDOWS/system32/mfc4* /home/jafar/.wine/c/windows/system32/
4) Download mt4setup from FX Egypt (Of course )

5) Install MT4.

Quote:
wine mt4setup.exe
6) You should now have an icon on your Desktop and a working install of MT4 under Linux!

* Please note, in order to set a limit/stop order without an invalid parameters error you need just to remove the expiry (Uncheck the box under the entry price).

Linux is another operating system. It's not compatible with windows, so you need an emulator (although Wine Is Not an Emulator ) and some configuration things to have running some Windows programs (like Metatrader, which I suppose you know it's a program to trade forex) under Linux.

telefrancisco understands. :)
I prefer using linux as I don't have to worry about viruses or keyloggers stealing my financial information since Linux is immune to them. I don't need a virus checker taking up valuable system resources. Another plus is no annoying popups for updates etc.., multiple desktops and a generally much faster and smoother system to work on which is important when trading.

Thank you for instructions, I'm now able to trade forex under linux. So happy about it but I got problem placing the limit/stop order. I can't uncheck the expiry box. It got no response while trying to uncheck. Any idea how? Thanks again. Happy New Year. Bye.

Rgds.

That's a weird one. Well if you can't uncheck it for some reason, you can manually move the expiry to some date in the future instead. That should be your workaround. :)

Just a quick line to say this method for getting MT4 working under linux has been tested in Gentoo, Suse, Whitebox, and Slackware and works just as well. Actually, the Gentoo one works a little faster due to the compiled in nature of the Gentoo distribution so Wine was compiled to take advantage of my Core2Duo system.
