If you go to google and enter, for example, "laptops", you will get two columns of results. The column on the left is called organic and the column on the right are paid adverts. (there are also some paid adverts on the top of the left column)

The links in the organic column get there via SEO. That means the website owner has used SEO to get the search engine to approve the site and get it into the first results page. SEO is a way of creating and promoting a website so that it gets onto a better search engine result page to get more traffic.

The website links in the right hand column are there via PPC. The website owners ask the search engine to put the links on the results page and then pay the search engine each time someone clicks on their links, pay per click.

Both are a way to get website traffic.
